[Review] Getting Closer – SEVENTEEN — KPOPREVIEWED

Introduction

Well it seems like this is an introduction about the topic I chose, which is K-pop. K-pop or Korean pop (케이팝) is a genre of popular music originating in South Korea. While the modern form of K-pop can be traced back to the early 90s, the term itself has been popularized since the 2000s, replacing the term Gayo, which also refers to domestic pop music in South Korea. Although it generally indicates “popular music” within South Korea, the term is often used in a narrower sense to describe a modern form of South Korean pop that is influenced by styles and genres from around the world, such as experimental, jazz, gospel, hip hop, R&B, reggae, electronic dance, folk, country, and classical on top of its traditional Korean music roots. The more modern form of the genre emerged with the formation of one of the earliest K-pop groups, Seo Taiji and Boys, in 1992. Their experimentation with different styles and genres of music and integration of foreign musical elements helped reshape and modernize South Korea’s contemporary music scene.

Modern K-pop idol or Korean idol began with the boy band H.O.T, in 1992. After a slump in early K-pop, from 2003 TVXQ and BoA started a new generation of K-pop idols that broke the music genre into the neighbouring Japanese market and continue to popularize K-pop internationally today.

In the K-pop world, there are several agencies that are popular. They’re also called ‘Big 3’. Big 3 consists of SM Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, and YG Entertainment. But recently, Big 3 changed into Big 4. Big 4 consists of SM Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, Bighit Entertainment, and CJ E&M. YG Entertainment is not there because this agency just had a big case and the shares declined slightly.

SM Entertainment is Korea’s largest entertainment company. It was found by Lee Soo-man. The label is home to prominent K-pop artists such as Kangta, S.E.S., BoA, TVXQ, TraxX, CSJH The Grace, Super Junior, Girls’ Generation, J-Min, Shinee, f(x), Zhou Mi, Exo, Red Velvet, NCT, and produced and popularized artists like H.O.T., Fly to the Sky, Shinhwa, and Henry Lau.

There’s also a K-pop group that is labelled as ‘The King of K-pop’, which is BIGBANG. BIGBANG is a boy group which debuts on August 19, 2006. BIGBANG is the most legendary K-pop group. It is not because they sold most album in boyband history ever with 140 million, and it is not because they are Koreas national boy group since 2008, and it’s not because their live stages can’t  be beaten, and it’s not because each and every member has a successful solo career, and it is not because they are culture and fashion icons. It is because the whole Korean music industry shifted and re-modeled itself to be more like BIGBANG.

BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan) and EXO are clearly K-pop’s hottest super groups. Both groups have multiple members, who all sing or rap, and dance. BTS garnered international praise and growth in popularity after winning Billboard’s Top Social Artist award two years in a row. But EXO not only made a major comeback in 2017, but they did it again in 2018 with their chart-topping album “Don’t Mess Up My Tempo.”  BTS debuted on June 12, 2013, while EXO debuted on April 8, 2012.

thank you!!:)
